Saving The World? Save Yourself First!

I used to say, “If you will take care of me, I will take care of you.” Now I say, “I will take care of me for you, if you will take care of you for me”. ~ Jim Rohn

Whenever the flight attendants brief the onflight safety procedures, the first thing they’d say is to first put the oxygen mask on yourself before helping the people you’re sitting with. It doesn’t matter if the person next to you is your suffocating spouse or child, you’ve gotta take the oxygen mask for yourself first. It doesn’t matter whether you’re on the air, land or underwater, you must always take care of yourself first.

Save yourself first

You're not a superhero, you need oxygen.

I love scuba diving. It’s one of the most awesome past-time activities ever invented. It’s hard to beat the feeling of weightlessness, flying underwater and enjoying the beauty of the underwater world. Before every dive, we need to identify a dive buddy to take care of each other. One of the basic requirements to pass my open water certification was this: I had to know how to check and account for every piece of equipment before putting them on. Once I secure that, then and only then, I do a buddy check for my dive buddy. Once underwater, we’ve to ‘equalize’ and keep check on our own oxygen level.

Every procedure in scuba diving requires me taking care of myself first before checking on my buddy. How can I take care of my buddy if I’m not secure? I’ll be endangering both our lives. Even a dive master has to make sure he’s alright before taking care of the divers under his care.

In the same way, the above analogies apply to every area of our lives. The single best contribution we can give to the world out there is to make sure our own world is spinning like how it’s supposed to spin in its own orbit.

I used to think that I was born to save the world. I was trying to be helpful and undoubtedly, it’s great feeling being needed. Now I’m convinced that if my life and my house is in order first, then I can be more useful to the world around me. No matter how noble you think you are, but the world doesn’t really need a superhero, a super-saint or a super-problem solver, it needs sane ordinary people like you and me to live well and take charge fully of our own lives.

Whether it’s at home, work or play, be accountable and responsible for everything we do and say, and the world will truly be all right and more than safe.

To live a fit life, ask yourself these questions:

1) What ‘safety procedures’ do I need to put in place for my own life?

2) How can I be kinder to myself today?

3) How can I truly take care of my loved ones and subordinates by taking care of myself first?
